I didn't get any response since then. Finally, I got my diploma at the beginning of December '06 from the University of Zurich - also included was a grade for this paper...I got a 5.5. I didn't expect such a good one ;)
I still think there would be much more to do in the paper in its current version. Today, I would include much more about Web 2.0, would change some of my questions in the practical part and would also try to get a better picture about the people who participated.
A very interesting research topic would also be to investigate the role of political blogs in campaigns around the world.

I'd be pleased to have some critics from you! Hope the paper helps to some who are writing about similar topics (I still get some feedback or questions from time to time to my blog or to corporate blogging in general - I'm always glad to help!).

You can download the paper HERE (it's in german)
Update 040107: Unfortunately there's an hourly download limit on this page. I could also email it to you if you'd be interested.
Update 230311: Updated the link again after some complaints... :)

Abstract about the paper

My institut published here my abstract of the paper recently. Hope I can publish the whole paper within the next weeks (after my Prof gave me a feedback)...

Meanwhile, I looked through some blogs which I subscribed on Bloglines. The blogosphere is moving so fast, that I already think my thesis is out-of-date...

I like the list from Tim Fischer of a first draft of his bibliography he used for his PhD even though it's a bit old.
I think it's interesting for future works to see what bibliography was used in earlier papers. Especially when you write a thesis about it... ;-)
Please look also on earlier links to lists about blogging: here and here...and also on the left...

Hope these lists and the following bibliography can help someone to have it easier in writing a paper about blogging:

Alphonso, D./Pahl, K. The field is so active at the moment that there are new articles or studies every week...
I had to stop reading my Bloglines-Blogs beginning of November to concentrate on the sources I had - no considerations of any sources after this date...

Zerfass & Bölter's Meinungsmacher-book helped me a lot bringing my thoughts in order at the end (and also seeing in which directions I could have written more in my thesis). The whole aspect of trust in the online-communication was not considered, even though I wrote (together with others) a semester work about it lately. Also the more macro-view on social software and the whole discussion about Web 2.0 was not considered, even though very interesting! Still, these aspects should be taken into consideration in a study about the blogosphere in general and not in a thesis about blogging for companies.

I'll show some results of the online-survey on this page within the next days - the thesis will be sent out to the people who were interested after the review of my prof.

Absolutely great would be an overview of the different kind of blogs - I don't think that the current categorizations (which I also use in my thesis) are accurate anymore due to the fast changing of the blogosphere...anybody out there keen to make a thesis about it?

Chocolate and books

With lots of chocolate in reach, a little burn-out-effect from writing every day (incl.Sundays) and a little disappointment about the quite uninteresting Switzerland-Ireland football game yesterday, I'm still about to revise my thesis.
My productivity is quite low at the moment - hope there's more motivation tomorrow after juggling later today...

Blogs swamp the world: Survey in the UK // Eypocard

The Guardian from the UK released an article about young people blogging in the UK today.

They use the internet on average 8h/week mainly for online communities, messaging services or email, which is quite a lot, but not that surprising.
What IS surprising: One third of them also said they have their own blogs or webpages!

The survey was a controlled quota sample of 580 people aged between 14 and 21 on September 16-17 and the interviews were conducted face-to-face in 36 randomly selected areas in the UK. The survey was done by ICM.
Seems to be greatly done...

For the rest, I can only add the comment from 'The angel blog':

>One thing is certainly true. If the Guardian is anything like right,
>there are going to be an awful lot of blogs out there.

Interesting is also the email exchange between him and gapingvoid.
First impression - I do have to admit - is not that good for a Master Thesis...especially the unclear sources for the literature and the sometimes needless digressions into topics which have nothing to do with what he wants to find out - by the way: It's also not really clear WHAT exactly he wants to find out - there are no theses given in the paper...- I could add some more things like the excessive use of pictures or the sometimes wired sources in his bibliography - but, hei, I first have to do something better! Always easy to criticise...

Update

I just got the update for my survey.

I'm studiying media science at the university of Zurich, but never heard about blogs before...
Hei, didn't know there's a swiss blog scene!! Very interesting due to its different results in comparison to earlier studies (75% of blog readers are over 30 years old, 43% have incomes over $90,000, over 90% of readers read less than 15 blogs daily, only 8% were computer professionals, 72% have never read blogs via RSS ->discussion).
By the way, the best marketing-blogs - in my opinion one of the best surveys available right now about marketing and blogs (Obwohl viel zu teuer und somit effektiv hauptsächlich ausgerichtet auf "dumme Marketing-, PR- und Werbeabteilungen, die unter dem dauernden Druck stehen, der Geschäftsführung neue, geile, marktpenetrative Ideen zu präsentieren" -> Blogs as a marketing instrument is my topic for my thesis. Now I'm standing at the start of a looong summer in front of the computer.
I do not have a time schedule given by the departement so I can write as long as I want. I'll try to finish it anyway in about 5 months - so I still have some time to travel (Helsinki and Lissabon are planned - Africa most probably has to wait until next year)...
I'm very motivated right now and think that my topic is very interesting! I had to convince my Prof a bit, but I think he was not very up to date with blogs - will start writing next Tuesday...Monday working and hoping that I find more interested people in haptics - quite a small area of interest and hard to pick out the interested people - think that the robotics-sector from Japan could be a hot sector - have to try that out...

civilization

Strange to think to have done something but at the end you've done nothing at all.
